What is Toner Phoner Telemarketing?

Telemarketing and e-commerce fraud costs companies $350 billion in sales each year. The Imaging Supplies Industry has suffered major losses due to false and misleading representations of their toner cartridges and other printer supplies. This has lead Xerox, Canon and other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of consumable imaging supplies (ribbons, printer toner, inks, cartridges, etc.) to form the Imaging Supplies Coalition to protect their industry as well as their customers.

One of the scams ISC has identified is “Toner Phoner” Telemarketing. Toner Phoner Telemarketing begins with a phone call from a friendly representative who may say that he or she is calling to do an equipment survey, a follow-up on a service call or to inquire about supply inventory. The telemarketer will press for the name of the office supply clerk and/or the make and model of the customer’s machines. Sometimes the telemarketer will ship counterfeit toner cartridges, without authorization, to the attention of the office supply clerk, and other times he or she will inform the supply clerk that the costs of supplies will be skyrocketing, pressuring the supply clerk to “lock in” on the prices immediately.

What is Printer Toner?

Printer toner is sometimes referred to as “dry ink” or “ink toner” but toner is not ink at all. Toner is powder that contains plastic beads. When paper is fed through a laser printer that uses toner, the paper is electrically charged. (Toner is also used in photocopiers and in some fax machines.) Laser printer toner is attracted to charged areas on the toner drum, and then is transferred to paper. Then the paper and toner are heated and the plastic beads melt. Heat burns the toner onto the paper, and that’s how the toner sticks to the paper. It is also why paper feels warm when it comes out of the machine!
